Students from Tra & Alana's reading program were treated to lunch & a surprise phone call from Tra from Dallas, Texas. The day began with students watching a video which we produced that was a culmination of events they participated in with Tra and Alana's “Reading for Life” mentorship program. During lunch the students were pleasantly surprised as a call came in from Tra from to congratulate them on their hard work & perseverance in the reading program.
After lunch, the students from Tra & Alana's reading program were invited to join their classmates from the 3 rd grade to sit in the auditorium for what they thought was going to be an assembly hosted by their principal. When in fact students were introduced to Debbie & Bill Pollakov from the “Bikes for Kids” foundation, Tra's reading program partner Alana Eldridge and former teammate Steven Gregory.
The class was taken totally by surprise as they all received a brand new bike & helmet for the holidays as a reward for their hard work and effort with reading. Bill & Debbie started their foundation “Bikes for Kids” over 6 years ago; & have donated over 4500 bikes to at-risk 3 rd grade children from low-income families from elementary schools from San Diego County for over 6 years…
Lunch was donated by Joe Pantoja from Grab n Go Sub & extra goodies and drinks where provided by C.V.S. Pharmacy.
Following the bike give-a-way Battle for Success hosted a holiday turkey gave-a-way sponsored by Person Ford, for 30 families from the school. Each family received turkeys and fixins for a holiday meal. It was an overwhelming day to see students & their families to be a part of such a rewarding program that “Battle For Success” provides.
