Sharp HealthCare, San Diego’s health care leader, joins Athletes for Education and Steve Gregory’s
SG Squad in their mission to promote a healthy lifestyle and establish lasting life skills. This program
will include the mentor class students of Sunset Elementary School, and their families.
Throughout the school year, physicians, nurses and other health experts will bring important health
and nutrition information onsite to the students through short lectures, specials events and other
practical tips on making healthy choices (at school and home). Sharp will also conduct quarterly
evaluations of the mentor class to monitor their progress in the SG Squad Wellness Program.
Confidential student evaluations include a brief health questionnaire, measurements (weight and
height) and calculation of body mass index (BMI). Measurements and progress will be monitored for
the entire class, while individual student information will not be shared.
Sharp HealthCare will also provide bi-monthly educational seminars for Sunset Elementary School
families, utilizing their bilingual staff members (English and Spanish). These special seminars will
focus on a variety of health topics such as heart health, diabetes, healthy eating and exercise. More
importantly, free health screenings will be included for family members.
