Each year Camp Leon awards middle school children for their hard work during
the school year. This sports activity camp emphasizes fun and physical activity.
Mindinho and his Capoeira Brasil team use rhythm, dance and kicks to get the
children excited about fitness. Lonny Mitchell runs the QB & Receiver station
where kids learn the fundamentals of catching a football pass and running a
receiver route; while Camp host, Leon White & Karl Wilson focus on football
techniques and drills.
Medical volunteer, Dr. Brad Stiles summed up the day the best when asked why
he chose to get involved instead of standing on the sidelines in case someone
needed his assistance. “How could I just stand and watch? Look how much
fun these kids are having! This is awesome. I had to get involved and join in the
fun!”
For the 2010 edition of Camp Leon, teamwork and the power in believing in
yourself proved to be the most valuable lesson. When the obstacle course
teams were being formed, it appeared that one team might have an advantage
because of the size of one versus the other. The coaches – Larry and Lonny
Mitchell – talked up each team and told them “Believe in yourselves! You can do
anything you set your mind to!”
The kids used all their newly acquired skills from the camp as they ran around
tackle dummies, braved water, mastered receiver routes, caught passes and
then dashed to the finish to tag their team member. It was hard to tell who was
having more fun – the adults or the children – as everyone cheered, clapped
and yelled encouragement as all 90 of the children made their way through the
obstacle course. It isn’t important which team won as the lessons learned in the
12th Annual Camp Leon will surely be something these children will carry for a
long time to come.
Thank you to our wonderful team of volunteers, Hoover High School, and
our generous sponsors including Jeff Drucker Subway Incorporated…
