In Loving Memory…

steven haynesSteven Haynes, Founder and President of Athletes for Education had a vision to "help our youth help themselves". Steven relentlessly pursued this vision over the past decade. He attracted friends from all walks of life, professional athletes, doctors, lawyers, business owners, teachers, mom's, dad's… with a common theme – they genuinely care for each other and share in the mission to help kids. Steven epitomized a philosophy that "each true friend represents a world in us, a world not possibly born until they arrive, and it is only by meeting that a new world is born". This was certainly true in my life. A new world literally was born for me - AFE represented a major community focus for my company, my family & me. AFE has created opportunities for my kids to understand the value & importance of giving back... Lessons that are priceless in life!

The AFE family he created has grown and now includes literally thousands of kids who have been touched directly or indirectly by his efforts. Steven whole-heartedly believed that it was important to reward kids for hard work. He motivated them to achieve better grades, better citizenship, just simply being better young people. He was instrumental in creating many rewards including "prime time" opportunities for kids to see the San Diego Chargers home games. He was one of the most giving, NEVER taking, individuals you will ever meet. He never complained and worked to achieve the AFE mission 24/7… AFE received and was recognized for many major achievements including one recent that Steven was very pleased – the Governor's Gold Medal Award for Fitness and Health presented to Sunset Elementary, Steve Gregory's SG squad and AFE on November 23rd, 2010.

The Christmas parties that Steven organized have become part of the community as well. AFE has provides over 1000 toys to the community through partnerships with the business community and local restaurants each year.

"Many people die with their music still in them. Why is this so? Too often it is because they are always getting ready to live. Before they know it, time runs out." Steven, your time came too soon, too young, but we give a huge thanks for not transitioning to heaven with your music still in you! You are truly one of the heroes of the San Diego community. We love you and your music will live on in the hearts and minds of all of us you touched.

Upward & Onward, Scott Leggett AFE Board Member
