INACO.com, with toys and assistance from Athletes for Education, visited Tijuana, Mexico on December 4, 2011 to provide toys and smiles to children who otherwise would not have received anything this year.
We visited a neighborhood in the enpoverished hills of Tijuana, to visit a few working families who are struggling to get by. The parents of these children all have jobs, like selling newspapers and magazines, but barely make enough to get through the month.
We met the families in their neighborhood, but their house was too small to accomodate so many people and toys all at once, so we setup to distribute the toys out of the back of a truck.
All the children where eager to chose a toy and celebrate Christmas a little bit early. To determine who chose their toy first, we lined up kids based on their academic grades, as a reward for studying hard during the year. Every child got a toy, even if they where not the smartest in the class. It served as an incentive to do better next year and to be aware how education will open doors for you, even when you don't expect it.
We had an older child with special needs who also participated and took home a basketball...he was the happiest kid of them all, eager to go to the basketball courts and play.
Once we where done handing out toys, all the parents and children said thank you and where greatful for an early Christmas from Athletes for Education and INACO.
