INACO.com, with toys and assistance from Athletes for Education, visited an orphanage (Ave Maria Casa Hogar) in Tijuana, Mexico on December 12, 2011 to provide toys and smiles to children who are in need of toys, sports equipment and support for their physical activites program.
We visited the orphanage with high school students from IDET Preparatoria, who handed out the balls, bats, gloves and exercise oriented toys to the children of the orphanage via interactive games. Children competed in games like: standing still the longest, jump roping, simon says and other fun games that allowed the high school students to interact with the young kids at the orphanage.
The orphanage currently has funding for day to day services and has a few volunteers as well as 5 full time teachers in the school. There are a total of 130 children in the school, all elementary school age, plus 5 infants. The orphanage was seeking support in developing a sports program and in acquiring sports equipment. Athletes for Education provided basketballs, soccer balls, volleyballs, baseball bats (soft) and balls, some gloves, badminton sets, tennis rackets and some balls, as well as various other items. The children receive a PE class twice a week and will use the provided items for their classes and play time.
IDET High School students are volunteering at the orphanage as part of their community service. We thank the staff at IDET, including Aracely Acevedo and Crystal for organizing the event.
