Athletes For Education Foundation, through special partnerships with companies like Bike Athletic, Gilman Gear and Riddell Athletic, is able to purchase athletic equipment at a reduced rate and passes that savings along to organizations, schools, and teams that purchase their equipment through us.
AFE is committed to assisting schools and organizations with equipment purchases, hosting athlete and coach skills training certification camps, and to the development of interscholastic athletic programs.
Why do we think this is important? Research and statistics show that team-building activities such as organized athletics teach children how to work together, develop discipline, dedication and character. Most important, such programs create an environment in which youth learn to set and accomplish realistic goals, participate in wellness activities that reduce stress and channel energy and aggression towards a constructive and productive result.
Self-esteem derived from success on the field facilitates success in the classroom, at home and minimizes gang violence, juvenile crime and drug abuse in the community. Participation in organized athletics has positive effects on achievement and attendance of students, significantly lowers dropout rates, and provides students with an opportunity to be recognized and respected by their peers, coaches and college scouts with scholarships in hand. In fact, a study of San Diego’s high school students shows that those who participate in athletics work harder to succeed, have more energy to study, exhibit greater self-discipline, share better relationships, avoid gangs, and attend school with greater regularity.
In 1999, we partnered with Senator Donald “Ducks” Cole from the U.S. Virgin Islands to help bring interscholastic tackle football back into their high schools and facilitated the purchase of football uniforms and equipment from companies such as Bike Athletic, Gilman Gear and Riddell Athletic.
Prior to this partnership, St. Thomas had not had an organized interscholastic High School football program in place since 1986. Senator Cole’s campaign commitment to the youth of St. Thomas was to offer high school youth organized after school athletic activities, offering healthy opportunities and choices for building bridges for a healthier and happier future.
