Akbar & Glenn Cunningham has been in the world of finance for the last ten years where he has become a Certified Financial Planner, managed people’s portfolios privately, and created advanced management strategies to help them grow their wealth. However, he knew he could be doing more with his passion for numbers as he realized that entire communities were not afforded the opportunity to learn about the importance of saving, budgets and investing. He believes that “knowledge is power. If you know things, you can gain an edge.”
Through his program Financial Literacy Mentorship Program through AFE, Glenn has partnered with Akbar Gbaja-Biamila to educate youth about the importance of staying out of debt, the dangers of credit cards, budgeting, and learning to how wisely invest at a young age. Akbar knows from personal experience how easy it is to fall into the trap of showing your wealth once you have “made it” as he has watched teammates and friends blow through a million dollars without really knowing where it all went. Because of cultural and economic similarities with the youth, Akbar’s involvement enables the students to relate and better understand while offering them a fun way to learn about finance.
During the six-day class, Akbar introduces approximately fifteen (15) students to the video game learning experience. Each consecutive day, Glenn leads the youth as they play the game “Financial Football” during 50-minute sessions to teach them the fundamentals of money management, savings and interest, credit and debit, and budgeting. On day six, the kids are rewarded when Akbar returns to class on Game Day to test what they have learned.
Both teachers realize the need to combat the notion that you need to be rich to be able to invest, but Akbar comes prepared with these biblical words of advice, “What you do with a little is the same you do with a lot. You need to be faithful with a little.” Both Glenn and Akbar, they are motivated by teaching the next generation to be money smart. “It’s a great feeling when a kid has an “aha” moment – when he/she gets it and it sticks!”

Current and retired NFL players and athletes from sports such as Capoeira, a form of Brazilian Martial Arts, volunteered their time to serve as role models for Camp AGB participants. Students learned the importance of health and fitness and participate in activities designed to teach coordination, teamwork, discipline, and build self-confidence. Our goal is to motivate children to succeed in school, strengthen their self-esteem and inspire them to follow their dreams.
This year, 150 middle school students from Fontana Unified School District participated in Camp AGB. Athletes and camp MVP’s participated in an evening of dinner and bowling, followed by fun at Dave & Busters.
